For the second year running, we were back to set up and run the complete audio-visual production for the World Para Powerlifting at Wythenshawe Forum.

In this ultimate test of upper body strength, international athletes take part in a specially designed bench press competition. The results of this competition are decisive for a qualifying place in the upcoming Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Prior to the event, our team designed and built bespoke ramps with particular specifications outlined by the Paralympic event, meeting requirements for competitors. In addition to these ramps, we had plenty of equipment going out for this event. After an extended break from such events, it was safe to say that loading in was a different day from the ‘new normal’ we’ve all gotten used to, but nonetheless, a taster of future events to come. Take a look at the size of the truck with all of our equipment in!

Once all of our equipment was on site, we setup the full field of play platform including our bespoke ramps, staging, lighting, a complete PA system, in-venue audio and video, audio playback and, televisions for in-house scoreboards. The competition ran over the course of three days where we collaborated with Alan March Sport, who produced the show and provided commentary. We also provided the live stream team with all the equipment they needed for official use, assisting with in-house visuals.

Lights were also setup to provide a wash on the field of play, as well as spotlights to provide the right atmosphere for athletes and the live-streaming audience. The venue was pretty dark but we were able to capture a few good photos!

The WPPO was the first event of its kind to be held in the UK since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With international contestants flying in, extra steps were taken to minimise the risk of exposure to COVID-19. This included our own technicians forming a ‘bubble’ and travelling to and from the venue and hotel rooms and only having contact with each other. In addition, all the team were tested prior to setup and on the final day.

In line with the current restrictions, spectators weren’t allowed in the venue but hopefully, next year will be different and the atmosphere will be much louder. Lastly, a massive congratulations to all the new records set during this event by the competitors, it was a delight to be a part of!
